How World Cup Group Standings Work
Football group standings summarize each team’s results. A win is normally worth three points, a draw is worth one point and a loss is worth zero points. When teams finish level on points, tournament regulations apply additional ranking criteria.
Goal difference is calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored. A team that scores seven and concedes four has a goal difference of plus three. Goals scored may be used after goal difference, followed by further competition-specific criteria.
Use the calculator carefully
The ToolPinch group calculator applies the common first steps: points, goal difference and goals scored. It is useful for scenarios and learning, but official tournament tables may apply head-to-head, fair-play or drawing-of-lots rules after those values remain tied.
Group-stage checklist
- Enter all six scores for a four-team group.
- Check points before goal difference.
- Use goals scored when goal difference is equal.
- Consult the official competition regulations for unresolved ties.
Tournament formats and tiebreakers can change. Official organizers remain the final source for qualification decisions.
