How to use the pay period converter

Use this converter when job offers, contracts or budgets quote income on different schedules. It provides a consistent annual baseline and converts it into the common pay periods without treating biweekly and semimonthly as the same.

Formula

The entered amount is first converted to annual pay, then divided into 52 weekly, 26 biweekly, 24 semimonthly or 12 monthly periods.

Worked examples

$25 per hour at 40 hours

$25 × 40 × 52 equals $52,000 annually, $2,000 biweekly and about $4,333.33 monthly.

$2,000 biweekly pay

$2,000 × 26 equals $52,000 annually.

$4,000 monthly pay

$4,000 × 12 equals $48,000 annually and about $923.08 weekly.

Hourly pay by pay period

Gross pay at 40 hours a week, before tax and deductions. Semimonthly and monthly amounts are annual pay divided by 24 and 12.

Why monthly pay isn't four weekly checks

A year has 52 weeks but 12 months, so a month averages 4.33 weeks, not 4. Someone paid $1,000 a week earns $52,000 a year, which is $4,333 a month, not $4,000. The same gap explains three-paycheck months: biweekly pay arrives 26 times a year, so two months each year get a third check. See the 2027 payday calendar for which months they are.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly?

Biweekly means 26 payments in most years. Semimonthly means 24 payments, usually twice each month.

Does this account for taxes?

No. It converts the pay amount entered without estimating taxes or deductions.

Why do hourly results require weekly hours?

Annual hourly income depends on how many paid hours are worked each week.

Can I compare two job offers?

Yes, but compare benefits, paid leave, bonuses and expected hours separately.

How much is $20 an hour biweekly?

$1,600 before tax at 40 hours a week (80 hours × $20).

Is semimonthly or biweekly pay better?

Annual pay is the same. Biweekly gives 26 smaller checks, with two months a year containing three. Semimonthly gives 24 larger checks on fixed dates, which can be easier for monthly bills.

How many weeks are in a month for payroll?

About 4.33 on average (52 ÷ 12). Use 4.33, not 4, when converting weekly pay into monthly pay.

Assumptions and limitations

Results depend on the values entered and are educational estimates. Pay figures exclude taxes, deductions and benefits. Workplace rules, rounding practices and legal requirements vary by location and employer.
