Understand the result
How to use the add or subtract time
Combine two durations or subtract one duration from another and normalize the result into days, hours and minutes.
Formula or method
Each duration is converted to total minutes, the selected operation is applied, and the result is normalized.
Worked examples
Add two durations
2 hours 30 minutes plus 1 hour 45 minutes equals 4 hours 15 minutes.
Subtract tracked time
8 hours minus 1 hour 20 minutes equals 6 hours 40 minutes.
A negative difference
3 hours minus 4 hours returns negative 1 hour rather than wrapping to a clock time.
Frequently asked questions
Is this for durations or times of day?
It operates on durations. Use Time Duration to compare a start clock time with an end clock time.
What happens when minutes exceed 59?
The calculator normalizes every 60 minutes into one additional hour.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. A subtraction can produce a negative duration when the second value is larger.
Can I add durations longer than one day?
Yes. The normalized result can include days, hours and minutes.
Limitations
This tool works with durations rather than clock times or dates.
