How to use the time budget calculator
Add the hours normally spent sleeping, working or studying, commuting, doing chores or care work, and using personal screens. The remaining part of a 24-hour day is shown as free time.
Formula or method
Free hours per day = 24 − entered daily commitments. Weekly and annual figures multiply that daily estimate by 7 and 365.
Worked examples
A full working day
Eight hours of sleep, eight hours of work, one hour commuting, 1.5 hours on chores and two hours of personal screen time leave 3.5 hours unassigned.
A student schedule
Eight hours sleeping, six studying, one commuting, two on chores and two on screens leave five hours for meals, exercise, relationships and other activities.
Thirty minutes reclaimed
Reducing any flexible category by 30 minutes creates 3.5 hours each week and about 182.5 hours across a year.
Frequently asked questions
What should count as free time?
Free time is simply the portion not assigned to the categories entered. Meals, exercise, family time and hobbies may be left free or included within chores and care, depending on what you want to examine.
Should I enter the same routine for weekends?
Use a typical day for a quick overview. If weekends are very different, calculate each routine separately and compare the results.
Is personal screen time automatically wasted time?
No. Screen use can include rest, learning, connection and entertainment. The calculator shows allocation without judging its value.
Why does the yearly figure look so large?
Small daily amounts accumulate. Thirty minutes multiplied by 365 days equals 182.5 hours.
Limitations
Daily routines vary, and the result is a planning estimate rather than a judgement or productivity target.
